Dr. Michael Heinz

Co-Lead, Evergreen | Co-Founder, Therabot Labs | Assistant Professor of Psychiatry, Geisel School of Medicine @ Dartmouth | Attending Physician, Dartmouth Health | Faculty Affiliate, Center for Technology & Behavioral Health

Michael V. Heinz, MD, is an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth, an attending physician at Dartmouth Health, and a faculty affiliate of the Center for Technology and Behavioral Health. His research brings artificial intelligence to mental health, wellness, and flourishing, spanning the full spectrum of prevention and well-being through the treatment of psychiatric illness.

Dr. Heinz co-leads Evergreen, a generative AI and behavioral sensing digital ecosystem to promote student wellness and flourishing. Built by students, for students, Evergreen pairs generative AI with optional, privacy-first behavioral sensing to deliver brief, science-based check-ins and personalized support. More than 300 Dartmouth students, staff, and faculty have contributed to building it, and a first-of-its-kind randomized trial launched in 2026. He also co-leads Dartmouth's Therabot research program, which conducted the first randomized controlled trial of a fully generative AI therapy chatbot. That trial, published in NEJM AI in 2025, showed clinically meaningful reductions in symptoms of depression and anxiety, as well as among those at high risk for feeding and eating disorders. Therabot has been covered by more than 200 news outlets worldwide, including The New York Times, The Washington Post, NPR, and NBC. In 2025, Dr. Heinz co-founded Therabot Labs to translate this work into broader clinical use.

Dr. Heinz contributes to state and federal AI policy efforts and serves as a Major in the U.S. Army Reserve Medical Corps.
